RESOLUTIONS { STYLE }

By Cristina Facundo

In my defense, I work in an industry that prides itself on debuting new collections every couple of months. Spring! Summer! Resort! Pre Fall! Fall! Couture! Winter!  How’s a girl to keep track of trends but more importantly, how’s a girl to fit everything in her closet? I can’t and honestly, I don’t even try. I have my regular closet, but I also have the floor, the bench in front of my bed, my styling studio and the hall closet (oopsies). A bit excessive, I know. It wasn’t until my mother came over and pointed out how organized my boyfriend’s side of the closet was compared to mine that I saw my space for what it was…a hot mess. A hot mess consisting of mostly black, white and denim. Where had all the color gone I used to wear?  Where were the prints?  Most all of it made in China?  It was apparent at that point, I brought more New York City home with me than I thought and it was time to make a change.

This year, I’ve decided to ignore the inner-thoughts of “but, it WILL come back in style,” and the “black is the new pink/red/white” and mix it up a bit.   So I am sharing with you my own style resolutions for 2014 and hopefully you can get inspired for your own style as well…

DOWNSIZE

I plan to downsize my wardrobe. I edit clothing for a living and yet I find it impossible to edit my own closet. This January, I’m donating anything I CAN live without.   Can’t decide what to get rid of?  Try it on…seriously.  Pour a glass of wine and turn on some music and make yourself try on anything you haven’t worn in the past 6 months.  Chances are you will be more than ready to part with a good chunk!  Quality versus quantity people!

Black and Gray

MIX IT UP

I am making myself bring color back to my wardrobe (deep breath in).  Between working backstage at New York Fashion Week and trying to blend in behind the scenes on the shoot, my wardrobe consists of mostly black!  However,  I am not always working so in 2014 I am bringing in a few pops of color to my wardrobe. (Deep breath out. I can do this).

STYLE COVER

THINK PINK

Now that I am committed to adding color, I think I’ll start with pink. Sure, orchid is the pantone color of the year for 2014, but if that’s too bright for you that’s okay!  Pink is everywhere and in the lightest shade, resembles white. Am I cheating my resolutions already?

Orchid

GO GREEN

Not the color (that was last years color!)…I’m talking about buying a local and eco-friendly wardrobe.  There are too many designers based in Austin who are creating beautiful clothing and accessories to not own more pieces.  No matter where you are, make an effort to support the local guys this year!

Shopping

BE BRAVE

I vow to be brave with style this year and figure out how to wear that one item in my closet I’ve never worn.  I bet you have something too…you know the one…you bought it but just can’t figure it out.  I’m betting it’s the most fabulous thing you own so ask a friend to help you style it and strut your stuff!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this! every bullet point I just kept nodding my head like an alcoholic in an AA program. I just helped my girlfriend do this last night with her closet (wine included!) and my boyfriend’s closet is OCD to the max. (maybe it’s a male bartender thing?) Great post Cristina!

We love this! You should consign some of your pieces with us at Co-Star – a great way to earn some cash on what you don’t wear, and put it towards something that you’ll love! 🙂

I love this! Can’t wait to see what pink pieces you pick out 🙂 I often feel like my closet is a bit of a mess. My husband and I started a new tradition of going through our closets at the New Year, and I hope it sticks!
